When people go to McDonald’s or other popular food chains, they hardly think of where the beef inside their burgers actually came from. They may know it came from an animal like a cow, but in fact, there is a long process for beef to go through before it can make it to the burger at McDonald’s. OSI Group is one of the world’s leading food manufacturers and suppliers that has been in business with McDonald’s for over fifty years. So anyone who has eaten a McDonald’s burger has probably had a patty that was handled by OSI as some point through the distribution process. OSI Group’s food processing facilities all over the world today that bring food products to millions of people.
OSI started out as a small and little-known meat shop, but now they maintain nearly 70 food processing plants around the world while employing more than twenty thousand people. OSI was growing at a decent pace for several decades once Otto Kolschowsky brought in his sons, but they saw massive expansion once they made friends with McDonald’s. Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald’s, opened up his fast-food restaurant chain in 1955. Before this, Ray an Otto had already struck a deal together agreeing that OSI Group would be McDonald’s beef supplier for their franchise. McDonald’s popularity grew faster than anyone had expected, which allowed both companies to grow impressively fast together and both of them needed each other.
As McDonald’s continued to grow and opened new locations outside of the United States, OSI Group needed a way to keep up with their scale and provide beef in much more distant locations. Luckily, OSI Group took on a new method for freezing meat products which allowed them to store their meats for long distance trips. By the 1970s, OSI Group started looking towards global expansion after expanding their operations in the United States. After OSI opened up new facilities throughout Europe in countries such as Spain and Germany, they became an international food processing corporation.

Chicken products appear to be on the rise in Spain, or at least that is what’s happening with OSI Group and their sister company OSI Europe. They’ve now finished construction to upgrade a meat plant in Toledo, Spain that now has its previous capacity for chicken doubled from 12,000 to 24,000 tons. The cost to upgrade the facility was €17 million and OSI Group President David McDonald said it was in the company’s best interest to upgrade that facility because now more regional customers than ever can be served with chicken products. Beef and pork have made the plant’s total production to 45,000 metric tons.
OSI Group has been outstanding in meat processing and packaging for over 100 years. What they’ve always looked to keep is a company whose values are rooted in family and building relationships with customers. Otto Kolschowsky began this by opening a butcher shop in Chicago and delivering some of the region’s best beef and poultry to local businesses. His shop became a company known as Otto & Sons, and he and his sons kept it running even during the hard times of the Great Depression and second world war. After the Kolschowsky sons took over management, they made their biggest partnership in 1955 when they signed the agreement to provide McDonald’s restaurants with the meats for their new specialty burgers. With this new partnership, Otto & Sons now had a goal to grow with their fast food friends and become something special.
The late 1970s and early 1980s was when Otto & Sons became a global company with a few large processing plants constructed around the US and then in Europe. They soon changed their name to OSI Group and in the next three decades purchased several subsidiaries. They currently own, Select Ready Foods and it’s Canadian companies, K&K Foods in Taiwan, Baho Food in the Netherlands, Flagship Europe in the UK and domestic farms Amick and Fair Oaks. They are ranked number 10 in the top 50 meat companies along with Perdue and Tyson, and number 54 in overall food companies. Along with McDonald’s, OSI Group has been supplying their meats to Wendy’s, Subway, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut and even a few meats to Starbucks. OSI Group has also shown they value employee safety and do as much as they can to eliminate employee injuries, and the British Safety Council recognized them for that by giving them the Globe of Honour.
OSI Food Group is a major international food production company that provides processed meals and foods to restaurants, grocers and local markets. The company is headquartered in Aurora, Illinois and it has been in business since 1909. OSI had been acquiring many food production plants that have been lagging in sales for an extended time or going out of business. OSI had recently purchased Baho Foods in the Netherlands.
Baho Foods is a Dutch based company that has operations in Germany as well. The company has been in business for 60 years and it markets everything from deli meats to convenience foods and snacks. The company provides their products for 18 European countries. Baho’s purchase by OSI Food Group will give the company a broader reach into European markets.
OSI will not change anything in terms of its employees. They will tweak Baho to meet the current demand of the market while retaining its original customer base and service track. This organization will ultimately help OSI Food Group to increase it market revenue as well. The purchase of the Baho plant is a part of the bigger picture for OSI. They have been steadily increasing their market share in foreign markets.
Tyson foods was purchased in in 2016 and they opened new plants in Portugal. The consumer food and restaurant market changes frequently. Many companies are not versatile enough to keep up with the changes. However, OSI has the resources and capabilities to handle the demands of the market. More European consumers are demanding chicken-based dishes from restaurants. People are also eating more of these products at home.
OSI Food Group is becoming one of the biggest and best companies in the world. They are steady increasing in market presence and steadily beating back the competition. This company provides many food supplies to restaurants such as Pizza Hut, Papa John’s and even Subway. OSI Food Group has become a rock solid company that is poised to do great things in the future.
When one thinks about that tasteful pizza, or bacon or even a hot dog, the question that comes to mind is how their availability and consistent quality is guaranteed. Most of the times these delicacies are one call away, a short walk away and so on. OSI Group, an American private holding company that deals with meat processing brings an end to this conundrum. They service retail and food service industries like MacDonald’s, KFC, Starbucks, Subway, Papa John’s Pizza among others. OSI Group has operational facilities in 17 countries worldwide and headquarters in Aurora, Illinois. Food safety and food quality assurance is at the heart of OSI Group’s service through the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point and Global Food Safety Initiative. For this kind of huge success, there has to be a certain level of discipline employed in the supply chain as well as very strong leadership at the top.
Among the leaders is the notable David McDonald, an experienced entrepreneur who has been of service to OSI Group for 31 years and is currently its President and Chief Operating Officer. He also serves on OSI Group’s Board of Directors. He is a widely successful executive as can be proved by his previous positions, among them, Chairman of the North American Meat Institute and today remains active on the Executive Board of the North American Meat Institute. David McDonald also served on the Board of Directors of Marfrig Alimentos, S.A. He was born and raised in Iowa and joined and graduated from Iowa State University in 1987 with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and was as well the recipient of the Wallace E. Barron Outstanding Senior Award.
David McDonald joined OSI Group in 1987 immediately after graduation where he was Project Manager. Over the years, David has grown with the company to the global giant it is today, and he, its President. Under his leadership, the company has acquired over ten Chinese facilities that deal with poultry and recently a Dutch company, Baho Foods. Asked how he achieved such tremendous success, David McDonald says it was his vision, shared with OSI to meet customer expectations. He praises the company’s grasp of cultures in different geographic areas as key to understanding customer needs and consequently satisfying them. Additionally, he posits that teamwork and the creation of partnerships with suppliers and government agencies have been instrumental in the company’s growth.
