Isabel dos Santos: A Wealthy African Businesswoman

Isabel dos Santos is a businesswoman who became the first African female billionaire, and her current net worth is estimated to be at two billion USD. She is the daughter of Jose Eduardo dos Santos, Angola’s longest running head of state who ruled the country for 38 years, from 1979 to 2017. Her power and influence in the business and politics enabled her to receive the recognition from BBC as one of the world’s most influential women.

Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, Isabel dos Santos pursued a degree in electrical engineering at the King’s College, located in the city of London, United Kingdom. She met her husband, Sindika Dokolo, as she was studying at King’s College. Sindika Dokolo is from a wealthy family living in Zaire, and he loves to collect art pieces. Together, the two started helping each other to gain more profit from their business empire (Crunchbase).

However, reaching the top of the business sector is not easy, and they had to work hard for it.Isabel started her career as she entered different companies which are listed under the European stock exchange, working under management positions. In 2000, Isabel dos Santos decided to return back to Luanda and headed the Urbana 2000. This subsidiary aims to disinfect the city of Luanda.

Later on, she established a trucking business and entered the telecommunications industry. She also opened a night club in Luanda Island, attracting thousands of visitors around the world. The profit she earned from her businesses based in Angola was used to invest in holdings based in Portugal, and it added to her wealth.

In 2016, her father appointed her as the head of Sonangol, the state oil company, but she was later removed from the office in March 2017.

Despite her removal from Sonangol, Isabel invests locally and abroad. She kept on investing in different firms and holdings, and it multiplied her wealth. According to her, she would want to continue the cycle of investing her money in a lot of investment options, and she believes that it would pave the way for her to earn more money.
