From Newell Brands to Implus Michael Polk’s Leadership Evolution

Few executives have navigated a career transition quite like Michael Polk. After serving as CEO of Newell Brands from 2011 to 2019 leading an organization of more than 50,000 employees through a major structural transformation Polk briefly stepped back from active leadership. The break did not last. A chance to take the helm at Implus LLC, a privately held fitness accessories business backed by Berkshire Partners, pulled him back into the mix.

What Changed and What Did Not

The scale was different. The pace was different. But Polk’s approach to leadership remained grounded in the same conviction: accountability drives results, and proximity to the work drives accountability. At Newell Brands, he was responsible to a board, shareholders, and a large public audience. At Implus, Michael Polk Newell Brands faces a similar structure in miniature a board and a set of owners who expect measurable value creation. “I had a Board of Directors and shareholders I was accountable to at Newell Brands, and I have a Board of Directors and owners I am accountable to at Implus LLC,” he has noted. The responsibility has not disappeared; the context around it has shifted.

What Polk found at Implus that he could not find at Newell Brands was a different kind of closeness to the work. Rather than influencing decisions through organizational layers, he collaborates directly with his team on brand development and commercial choices. That directness has reinvigorated his passion for the business-building craft.

The Player-Coach Model

At smaller private companies like Implus, senior executives often take on a player-coach role that is rarely available to leaders of large public firms. Michael Polk has embraced this model fully, drawing on his background as a marketing and sales executive to work alongside his team in ways that large company structures rarely permit. This shift in role has proven to be one of the defining features of what Polk describes as the “time of his professional life.” Read this article for more information.
