Kelcy Warren Makes Record $12 Million Gift to UT Arlington

The University of Texas at Arlington received the largest single donation in its history in 2023, and it came from one of its own graduates. Kelcy Warren, founder and executive chairman of Energy Transfer, gave the university $12 million.

The school said the money was meant “to help elevate UTA to the forefront of the growing resource and energy engineering (REE) field.” That discipline trains engineers to manage energy resources, a skill set with obvious value in a state where oil and gas production plays such a large economic role.

Why the Program Matters to Him

Warren earned his degree from UTA in 1978 and later joined the University of Texas System Board of Regents. He framed the gift as both personal and practical.

“I am honored to give back to the institution that has played such a pivotal role in advancing my educational and professional journeys,” he said. He added that “Texas faces a critical need for highly skilled graduates who can manage energy resources, and this innovative REE program will help meet that demand.”

Twenty-Five Years of Support

The 2023 donation was far from his first. Before it, Kelcy Warren had given UTA $4 million through 10 separate gifts across 25 years. One of those gifts created a graduate student fellowship honoring Syed Qasim, a former professor and mentor. Others supported Texas Tier One research initiatives and the Texas Business Hall of Fame Scholarship.

Taken together, those contributions show a steady relationship with the campus rather than a single burst of generosity. The new engineering program extends that bond into a field tied directly to the industry where he built his career.

His university giving fits a wider pattern. Kelcy Warren regularly supports educational institutions at every level, from grade schools to universities, along with medical institutions and children’s organizations. Energy Transfer itself operates more than 130,000 miles of pipeline and related infrastructure in 44 states, an enterprise that depends on engineers trained to manage energy resources.
