From Newell Brands to Implus: Michael Polk’s Next Chapter

Retirement did not last long for Michael Polk. After leaving Newell Brands in 2019, where he had spent years overseeing a portfolio of household names, Polk stepped back into the corporate world in 2020 to lead Implus LLC, a private fitness accessories company backed by Berkshire Partners. The move surprised some observers, given how different a sixteen-brand portfolio company is from a public giant like Newell.

Michael Polk has described the shift as less of a step down and more of a return to the parts of his career he found most engaging early on. Before running Newell Brands, he built his background at Kraft Foods and Unilever, spending years in roles closer to brand and business development than to the resource allocation work that later defined much of his time at the top of a public company.

A Different Kind of Pressure

Taking the Implus job during the early stages of the pandemic meant Michael Polk Newell Brands had little runway to adjust gradually. He spent his first stretch there reworking the company’s operating model and stabilizing its financial performance while the fitness and active lifestyle sector absorbed widespread disruption. He has since pointed to that period as evidence that private companies demand faster decisions than public ones, if only because there are fewer people to make them.

Polk credits the flatter structure at Implus with letting him engage directly with his team on choices that would have moved through several layers of management at Newell Brands. He now spends much of his time on the ground with employees rather than working through an organizational hierarchy to influence decisions, a change he has said suits him well after decades in more traditional corporate settings.

Having previously grown Newell Brands’ enterprise value from around five billion dollars to more than fifteen billion, Polk brings a proven record to a smaller stage, one he has called the most enjoyable chapter of his professional life so far. See related link for additional information.
