Michael Polk on the Hidden Advantages of Private Companies

Public companies get most of the attention in business coverage, but Michael Polk Newell Brands believes some of the sharpest leadership lessons come from the smaller, privately held firms operating just outside the spotlight.

The Case for Fewer Resources

Michael Polk spent decades inside large public organizations, including Kraft Foods, Unilever and Newell Brands, before taking over as CEO of Implus LLC in 2020. Implus, a fitness accessories company owned by Berkshire Partners, operates with a fraction of the resources available to a corporation like Newell Brands. According to Polk, that limitation is actually an advantage. With less to spend and fewer layers of management to work through, employees at private companies tend to take on real responsibility much earlier in their careers, learning through direct experience rather than formal training tracks.

Player Coaches, Not Distant Executives

Senior leaders at smaller firms, Polk has explained, end up drawn much further into daily operations than their counterparts at public companies. Rather than setting direction from above and letting others carry it out, they work alongside their teams as decisions are made, helping navigate the tradeoffs that come with limited budgets and tight timelines. Michael Polk describes his own role at Implus in similar terms, spending far more time on brand and business development directly with his team than he ever did while managing Newell Brands‘ sprawling portfolio.

That flat structure, he argues, also broadens what leaders actually understand about their business, from how products are sourced and made to how retailer relationships function day to day. For Michael Polk, the tradeoff of leaving a public company for a private one has meant less prestige on paper but considerably more hands-on influence over how the business actually runs. It is a tradeoff he has embraced without much hesitation, treating the smaller platform as an opportunity rather than a downgrade from his years at the helm of a Fortune 500 name.
